Start Early – Finding a Child Care Facility is Harder than you Think
Finding childcare should be easy, but there are a lot of factors that play into choosing the childcare that you need for your children, and it’s not as easy as you may think. There are a lot of different choices as far as the type of childcare out on the market, but your child is special and knowing what the roadblocks are too great care is the key. There are certain things that must be thought of before choosing a care option, so know what they are, so you’ll participate in making the right decision for the family as a whole, and child.
The first decision is figuring out what type of childcare that you want. It’s considered even more important than a budget for care but remember that your choice might have to be modified to accommodate what you can afford. Always have in line a second or third option to work with. If you’re in the unique situation that your child has special needs, then your choice might not be as flexible as others that don’t. Your family will need to decide if they want an in-home provider, nanny, a preschool program, if your children are the right age, or other family members to care for them. Some choose too a care provider to come to the home for looking after their children.
Secondly, the cost is another factor, some would say the major factor, but it needs to be balanced with what services you desire, or need for your child. A family budget should be worked out, at least six months to one year before a childcare decision is made. Don’t be shocked at the cost. Typical daycare center costs range from $100.00 to $400.00 dollars per child in certain geographic areas of the U.S. There are though multi layered discounts if you have more than one child enrolled in the centers. Cost is found in things such as meals, and some places even have uniform requirements, don’t forget too that field trips will be extra too.
Waiting lists are another reason to plan ahead. The best daycare centers, and private in-home options will have a long waiting list for your children. Best does not mean high priced, but ones that follow all of the guidelines set by federal and state laws, and ones that go above and beyond recommended educational standards for a child’s age too. They are innovative, and hire teachers or trained childcare specialists to do the job. You might not be happy to find out there is a waiting list, but that’s the downside to any quality service, everyone wants to go there.
Timing is everything so to speak, with daycare options too. If you’re lucky enough to be a nine to fiver with your job, then finding care for your children is not as hard as if you’ve got a part time job. It will be more difficult if it’s at nighttime and part time. Daycare workers and even those that provide in-home services, like to have a set schedule for day hours, and most don’t provide any services unless prearranged for weekends either. After all they have a life and need a break, so they can enjoy personal and family time. You might have to look for other care options to go along with your primary care around a work schedule that is off hours.
Roadblocks in childcare can be over come with enough planning, and careful thought for the overall outcome of quality childcare. There will be situations where it might take some innovative thinking, or even delaying the type of care that you and the family need for the children to be happy in, but it’s worth the wait and hassle. No matter what type of care that is decided on, make sure to always have in place a back up plan for those life curveballs that are occasionally thrown your way. You never know when the daycare center could shut down, the babysitter gets ill, or an in-home provider breaks an ankle. By preparing for the unexpected life will go much smoother, at least it’s easier to bear anyway. Follow the Boy Scouts of America motto – ‘to always be prepared’.
